State of the Union address will be different, Psaki acknowledges

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Sunday that President Joe Biden's State of the Union address on Tuesday will take on a different tone because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine last week.

"That is certainly something that is present in all of our lives and certainly in the president's life in this moment," she said on ABC's "This Week."

The Russian invasion, which is facing fierce resistance from Ukraine's forces, has been widely condemned around the globe. Making use of sanctions and international diplomacy, the Biden administration has been immersed in efforts to lead a unified response against President Vladimir Putin's regime and prevent the conflagration from spreading.

"There's no question that," Psaki said, "in the State of the Union, the American people and anybody watching around the world will hear the president talk about the efforts he has led over the past several months to build a global coalition to fight against the autocracy and the efforts of President Putin to invade a foreign country."

She insisted, however, that much of Biden's focus Tuesday would be on matters closer to home.

"What people will also hear from President Biden is his optimism and his belief in the resilience of the American people and the strength of the American people," Psaki said.
